What’s the Best Time of Year To Visit Alaska?

At Alaska Air Forwarding, we’ve spent the last 50 years shipping cargo to the great state of Alaska. Over the years, we have developed strong ties with other cargo companies and businesses in general as we have logged many hours flying in and out of the state shipping cargo. However, not only do we share close ties with other businesses, but we’ve also developed a solid knowledge of the state itself. We are very familiar with most every region and what each region has to offer in the way of tourist attractions.  Given our long history with the state, we are often asked the question: “What’s the best time of year to visit Alaska?” We thought it would be a good idea to answer that question here.

WHEN TO VISIT

The most important aspect when planning to visit Alaska is to truly plan your travel. Because Alaska does have such harsh winters and rugged terrain, mapping out your trip is very important.  There are a couple of resources that we can recommend that will offer some great tips.

The first: Alaska.org:  Here you’ll find an excellent resource that outlines many travel details about Alaska. The first detail is when to visit which is anytime between mid-May to Mid-September. The long, long summer days in Alaska make this four-month window an ideal time to visit.  June 21st, which marks the Summer Solstice and the longest day of the year, brings the longest hours of daylight to Alaska with 19 hours of daylight in Anchorage and 22 hours of daylight in Fairbanks.

Some other benefits to visiting during this time:

  • May is the driest month in Alaska with typically just a 25% chance of rain on most days.
  • Temperatures during these summer months are quite pleasant and usually fall between 60-80 degrees during the daytime with evenings being cooler with temperatures between 40-50 degrees.
  • August is a great time to hike in the High Country because the snow has completely melted by then and there are no mosquitos at this time, which makes being outdoors even better.
  • May to August is also a great time to hit one of the many Alaska Festivals or Fairs that are held throughout the state. This is a great way to meet locals and get a feel for the culture of the various communities within Alaska.

If you are able to visit Alaska between May and September, you will not be disappointed. You’ll find plenty of outdoor activities that everyone in your family will enjoy and you’ll have warm temps and long hours of sunshine to enjoy them.

In addition to Alaska.org another resource that we recommend when planning a trip to Alaska is TravelAlaska.com. A link to this website is on the Alaska Air Forwarding Directory page of our website.

At TravelAlaska.com, you’ll find all of the information you will need to plan your visit between the months of May and September. You’ll find:
